We must be familiar with coconut. It’s delicious and can be processed into various types of food making favored by many people. But did you know that every September 2 is celebrated as World Coconut Day?
World Coconut Day was first celebrated on September 2, 2009, by the Asia Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) to promote and raise awareness about the uses and benefits of coconut in various industries. Since then, the UN-ESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for the Asia Pacific) has authorized the APCC to celebrate this day annually on September 2.
The APCC was originally named the Asian Coconut Community, but when countries outside Asia began to join the organization, the name was changed to the Asia and Pacific Coconut Community. The agreement establishing the Asian Coconut Community was established in Bangkok on December 12, 1968 and signed by the countries of India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Once approved, the Asian Coconut Community began operations on September 9, 1969 with headquarters in Jakarta. The choice of September 2 for this annual celebration was also to mark the anniversary of the establishment of APCC on the same date in 1969.
In 2022, with the help of the Coconut Development Board (CDB), World Coconut Day was celebrated in several Indian states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, and others. The theme of World Coconut Day in 2022 was “Growing Coconut for a Better Future and Life”.
This year, Indonesia has the opportunity to host the World Coconut Day celebration in the city of Gorontalo. This year’s celebration has the theme “Sustaining Coconut Sector for the Present and Future Generation” and will be attended by coconut-producing countries such as Malaysia, India, Thailand, and Jamaica.
The World Coconut Day celebration, which is planned to take place on September 21-25, consists of several activities such as exhibitions, training for farmers, and seminars that present figures who are experts in their fields as speakers, such as the executive director of the International Coconut Community. Quoted from the official website of the International Coconut Community (https://coconutcommunity.org), the series of events will be opened by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno.
