The month of Ramadan is not only synonymous with a series of worship services performed by Muslims, but also with the tradition of hunting for takjil ahead of iftar time. The recent viral “War Takjil” on social media is proof that not only Muslims are eager to find takjil, but also non-Muslims. So, how did the origin of takjil come to be recognized by many people today?<\/p>\n

Every country has its own traditions during the month of Ramadan, one of which is the iftar menu. In Indonesia, breaking the fast always begins with eating takjil. However, many do not know that takjil is not actually the name of the food. The food that is called takjil itself is in the form of fried foods, as well as other snacks.<\/p>\n

Quoted from Detikfood, takjil in the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia is defined as food for breaking the fast that is rushed. Meanwhile, quoting from the Muhammadiyah website, the term takjil is taken from the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad narrated by Bukhari and Muslim which reads: “Man is still counted in goodness as long as he hastens (Ajjalu) breaking the fast”. So that takjil can be interpreted as an order to hasten breaking the fast.<\/p>\n

Takjil in Indonesia can also be found in the report De Atjehers<\/em>, written by Snouck Hurgronje in the late 19th century. The report recounts that the local Acehnese had organized a communal iftar (takjil) at the mosque along with spicy porridge.<\/p>\n

The tradition of takjil has been preserved and has become increasingly popular among Muslims in Indonesia. Today, the takjil menu is growing and becoming more diverse. In various regions, people have begun to add variations in flavor and presentation to their takjil. Such as colorful fruit soup, mayo risol, and delicious sweet potato balls. The time waiting to break the fast is made more enjoyable by hunting for takjil.<\/p>\n

Hunting for and sharing takjil is a tradition during Ramadan in Indonesia. Not only as a meal to satisfy hunger and thirst, but takjil can also be considered as a moment to gather with family and friends.<\/p>\n
