Bakiak Batok, Traditional Games from West Java

In Indonesia, the month of August is synonymous with Independence Day, which falls on the 17th. The enthusiasm of citizens in various parts of Indonesia can be seen from the all-red and white decorations that adorn the surrounding streets. Apart from the typical 17s trinkets and attributes, there are other characteristics in welcoming the Indonesian independence party, namely 17s competitions that are held to make the celebration even more lively!

Various competitions such as eating crackers to panjat pinang often color the independence celebrations in local settlements. These competitions also serve as entertainment for local residents in the atmosphere of independence celebrations. One race that we can find is bakiak batok kelapa.

Bakiak batok originated from Bogor, West Java and is also known as jejangkungan. This game uses an old coconut shell split into 2 parts as a footrest, then each part is given a hole right in the center which will later be hooked on a rope. Each player will later get 2 parts of the coconut shell, namely on the right and left.

How to play this bakiak batok is quite easy, but requires compactness between hand and foot movements. To play this game, the players must climb each part of the coconut shell. After that, hook the rope that has been installed on the shell on the big toe, like wearing flip-flops. Both hands will then hold the rope in rhythm with the pulling of the foot when stepping forward.

The player who gets to the finish line the fastest wins! This game can also be played using additional obstacles, such as providing ropes or barriers on the road so that players must be able to pass through the barriers without falling from the coconut shells they are riding on.

The excitement of the independence celebration is indeed a long-awaited moment every year. To keep up the spirit, don’t forget to drink CocoClub! Selected coconut water combined with chewy nata de coco makes your day more exciting. Get CocoClub at the nearest Indomaret chiller!
